Visit of Bishop Steven Ullestad

Bishop Steven Ullestad of the Northeastern Iowa Synod preached Sunday, November 15. In celebration of his visit, a special offering was taken for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37) is the guiding text for the Appeal. Following the service, Bishop Ullestad led a forum in the sanctuary on our partnership in ministry with the Synod.

After the visit, Bishop Ullestad posted the comment below on Facebook.

“What a joy to be with God’s people at Good Shepherd in Decorah. Mission is in their DNA. One of our leaders in general mission support, they help to sponsor a YAGM, are a part of sponsoring a missionary, proving support for a seminarian, will soon be hosting Barnabas Uplift and even more. No wonder they are such a joyful and hospitable congregation! By the way, Good Shepherd does all of this with an average worship attendance of 107.”

Communion Class, November 22, 10:45 am

IntinctionKids ages 4-15 and parents are invited to a communion class with Pr. Amy on Sunday, Nov. 22. We will gather in the narthex and use the narthex and sanctuary. This will be interactive and will help kids to understand how our celebration of communion in worship is like a meal.

I will continue to offer classes on communion periodically and seek to make communion and participation in worship and the sacrament a special experience for kids. Your child is welcome to commune whenever you feel it is right. Please let me know know if you would like one on one conversation about communion with you and your child(ren).
Peace,
Pastor Amy

photo 2 corrected photo 3 corrected photo 4 corrected

On All Saints Day, we remembered and celebrated saints from our congregation who died and were born since last All Saints Day.

  • Pr. Paul Hasvold, died January 19, 2015
  • Pr. Joan Mau, died May 24, 2015
  • James Bakke, died July 25, 2015
  • Kyle Joyce, born November 21, 2014

We also had the opportunity for personal prayer, reflection and candle lighting to honor the other saints we remembered on this day.  Anyone was invited to kneel at the altar rail to light candles and offer prayers.

Good Shepherd’s W/ELCA Coffee Project is excited to introduce three new caffeine-free Equal Exchange teas, Organic Ginger, Organic Green Tea with Ginger, and Organic Rooibos Chai.  The teas will be available starting on November 8 at the Country Store and into December!  The Organic Ginger tea is grown by the small-scale farmers of the Marginalized Organic Producers’ Association (MOPA) in Sri Lanka. The green tea in Organic Green Tea with Ginger comes from the Potong Tea Garden, located in northern India in the foothills of the Himalaya, and the ginger is from MOPA in Sri Lanka.
