RENOVATED GOOD SHEPHERD GARDEN
The Good Shepherd garden has been in place for over 25 years. It has been faithfully attended by Ed Hover, John Moeller, and many others. It has provided fresh, organic garden produce for Good Shepherd members. Those members in turn have donated cash for the produce. The monies collected have always been given to the Food Pantry. It is a Good Shepherd Mission.
The garden has grown weary. Soil borne diseases restrict what can be grown. Soil amendments are desperately needed for our sandy soil. The fencing barely keeps the critters at bay. In order to water anything you need to pull out nearly 175’ of hose.
A grant was recently received from the Depot Outlet for $3,000. The grant, along some other funds, will allow us to: 1) relocate the garden approximately 30’ to the east. This allows us access to fresh soil. It also better physically aligns with the Pollinator Prairie and maximizes our outdoor spaces. 2) Rebuild the garden fencing with 4×4 posts and hog/cattle panels. The east and west ends can be opened easily for access by a tractor and equipment. 3) Water, with an “outdoor water meter” will be piped to the garden. 4) A hose reel and small garden locker will be added. 5) The soil will be tested and appropriate organic amendments will be added.
The garden size will remain close to the same = 32’x 64’. The fence will be 7’ tall with two 4’ gates on the NW & NE corners.
